On Sunday, a bridge near Fong Yuan collapsed. It's on the road from Fong Yuan to Houli, a slightly smaller town. The bridge goes over the DaJia river, which is a bad river- it's very broad and filled with rocks. After the big earthquake years ago and the typhoons that followed, several bridges broke further upstream (including in Dong Shi where I go to meetings). There are constantly trucks removing rocks from the river in Dong Shi but it's like picking pebbles out of the ocean.

They say it was on the top 10 list of bad bridges in Taiwan, and the water and stones rushing against it were just too much. 3 or 4 cars fell in when it collapsed and some people died, I haven't gotten a real story on how many. A few people in my congregation and like half the Chinese teachers and secretaries at work live in Houli but they are all fine. It's just hard for them to get to Fong Yuan now because there aren't too many bridges across this river. I guess the big highway and the railroad are OK though.
