(i know this post is really old) but hahh have the same problem, except I'm taking advanced chinese at my university and the teacher is from beijing, but i grew up with taiwanese chinese. even though i can understand what she's saying (she doesn't add the 'r' sound as frequently as some chinese people), she always seems to have trouble understanding everything i say... even the most basic things like "I'm getting free ice cream." and I know i'm not incorrect because taiwanese people understand me just fine.

I just came across your blog when I clicked "next" and it caught my eye because I spent all of last summer (2010) in Taichung at Tung-Hai University. An apartment, and you would have to pay first months rent and 2 months rent worth of security deposit up front... so about $300 US or so? And a few hundred for a bicycle, basic househould stuff... and you won't get a paycheck for at least a month after you start working. I wouldn't come with less than $1500 US to tide me over but lots come with less and make it.

I've been seeing electric blankets lately -- possibly at Costco. Still, the quality and selection of the ones back in the West is by far higher.

Hong Kong is a really cool place to visit...but...expensive. Check out the street market on 'Jewelry Row" - I can't remember the name of street. But it is absolutely nuts! I would avoid organized tours. I went on one and it was very diappointing. If you can identify where you want to go, the public transport is excellent so should it should be no problem. I was also told by a resident that taxi's are very reliable and honest since there are major fines for over-charging and the like. Enjoy!

I did do the guasha. I've also had my share of foot massages- eeek. Once in conjunction with the guasha. Unfortunately I didn't think of it for this illness and I wound up getting better with antibiotics.
